The newest member to join the recently popular celebtrity weight gain train is Derek Jeter. Along with Lady GaGa and Jessica Simpson, Jeter is the latest to be scrutinized. Jeter’s embarrassing headline appeared on the Post’s back page, beaten by the front page “Stop & Fits”: featuring the cop who bought a homeless man a pair of shoes. The picture shows Jeter wearing a walking boot to protect recent ankle surgery (and carrying a little extra in his mid section.) The baseball star has been restricted from physical activity, probably accounting for the weight gain. As if the Yankees didn’t need any more bad publicity. The picture surfaces just as the team is outbid by Pittsburgh for catcher Russel Martin. Who is going to catch for the re-signed Mariano Rivera? In addition, there’s been criticism about signing players over the age of thirty (cough, cough, Alex Rodriguez, cough). On a positive note, it is probable that the “Derek Eater” headline has given ex-girlfriend Minka Kelly a reason to get over the break up, if she hasn’t already.
